Establishing a great baby bedtime routine for your newborns is one of the key factors in ensuring they get a good night’s rest. Here are a few things I like to do with my little ones before they sleep.

1. Clean the bathtub/sink area and Baby Tub
Sanitation is really important with babies. Since I shower every day using the tub, I like to make sure that I clean the tub before I use it to give my babies a bath.
I like to use Mrs. Meyer’s bathtub cleaner to clean my tub. I enjoy using these products because they are all-natural and safe for my babies.
For bath support, I use Angelcare Baby Bath Support from Amazon. I love using this product but I never thought to look inside it to make sure it’s clean. Once I did and realized that the gunk accumulates there (after being grossed out) I started washing it every time I give them a bath.
If you like using your sink to bathe your baby then I would recommend using a natural cleaner to clean it before you give your little one a bath.
2. Clean the toys
Why does everything always end up in their mouths? Since my little ones have a tendency to suck on anything, I wash their toys before bathtime. I will usually place them in the dishwasher for a quick wash before their bath.
This way, when they suck on them I’m not worried that they are ingesting germs.
3. Change bed linens
I usually change my baby’s’ bed linens 2 – 3 times a week. Frequently if they have an accident. I would recommend changing your baby’s linen frequently to ensure that they sleep on clean, warm sheets! Especially after a nice warm bath!
I like to use Shea Moisture Raw Shea Butter Baby Head-to-Toe Wash & Shampoo to bathe them! I love the different scents! They smell so good and leave my babies smelling really babyish, haha
When bathing, I always make sure that I pay close attention to certain body parts that we may neglect. IE, washing around their ears and cleaning in-between their toes. I also like using a different washcloth for their face and body. This is something I do for myself and I believe there should be a distinction on the wash clothes you use.

5. Lotion and Massage
Right after bathtime, I dry them up and apply lotion. I like to use Shea Moisture Calm and Comfort Raw Shea Chamomile and Argan Oil Lotion! I really love the scent of this lotion and the ingredients!
After I lotion them, I usually give them a massage. Massaging your baby really soothes them and helps them to sleep. There are a variety of techniques you can use to soothe your baby to ensure that they are relaxed and ready for bed!
6. Use Baby Paste
I have been lucky enough to not deal with diaper rash and this is because I always change their diapers immediately when I see they need to be changed! Another thing I do is to apply Boudreaux’s Butt Paste Diaper Rash Ointment because I have noticed that they can get quite red after pooping. I apply the paste before they go to sleep because I know they will be going to the bathroom throughout the night.
7. Trim their Nails
Baby nails grow so fast so you have to keep up with them! I have found that doing their nails before bedtime works really well because they are fed and ready to sleep. Some days are easier than others though!
I don’t do their nails every night but I try to do it 2 – 3 times a week depending on the growth.
I was always so afraid of doing their nails because I did not want to injure them! For the longest time, I couldn’t find the right trimmer but then I came across the Baby Nail Clippers by Royal Angels, I fell in love!
This trimmer works so well because it has sandpaper pads that you use to polish your baby’s nails plus an LED front light that directly aims at the nail so you can see where you are filling. Be sure to add this to your baby registry because it is a must-have for new moms!
8. Brush Teeth
My boys have started eating solids so I have added teeth brushing to their bedtime routine. Starting it this early is getting all of us in the habit of brushing their teeth every night. Since they are still young, I use a soft toothbrush and fluoride-free toothpaste.
You can also opt for the toothbrush that functions as a teether and allow them to bite into it. This cleans their teeth while soothing it when they’re teething. Another option is to use a finger toothbrush and brush their teeth yourself if they are too young to hold their own brush. My little ones are 9-months old and can hold their own brushes to the extent that they get upset when I try to take the brush away!
Yaaayyy for clean gums!
9. Clean Boogers
Another thing I do, especially when my babies have a cold and build-up of mucus, I will clean their noses before they sleep. I like to use Boogiebulb baby nasal aspirator and booger sucker to clean their noses. I like that this aspirator separates so you can clean the inside.
10. Story Time
Finally, the last thing I do with my babies before they sleep is read to them! I have been enjoying this part of our routine and I know they love it too! One of their favorite books is Goodnight Moon by Margaret Wise Brown and Clement Hurd. I love to read this to them while showing them the different objects mentioned.
Sometimes I will place the book under them and allow them to feel the words or navigate it themselves!
I can already tell they are going to be big fans of reading haha!
Here are some of the other books they enjoy:
- If Animals Kissed Good Night.
- Giraffes Can’t Dance
- The Wonderful Things You Will Be
- Your Baby’s First Word Will be DADA
